S M Mominul Islam (he/she/they) is a non-binary human rights activist, educator, and development professional whose work focuses on advancing human rights, social inclusion, education, and the rights and dignity of LGBTIQ+ people.

Mominul has a multidisciplinary academic background spanning sociology, social policy, development studies, and educational leadership. He completed his bachelor’s degree through Bangladesh National University, followed by a Master of Development Studies from North Western University, Khulna, a Master of Sociology and Social Policy from the University of Dhaka, and a Post-Graduate Diploma in Educational Leadership and School Improvement from the BRAC Institute of Educational Development at BRAC University.

Their academic and professional interests include social policy, gender and sexuality, development, poverty and inequality, ethnicity and social exclusion, population and health, disaster management, sociology, anthropology, economics, politics and the state, and social research. Mominul also has extensive knowledge in educational leadership, pedagogy, andragogy, curriculum and educational material development, assessment, school improvement, and research methodology, allowing them to approach human rights issues through both social development and educational perspectives.

Mominul has dedicated a significant part of his professional and advocacy work to promoting equality and improving the recognition and protection of LGBTIQ+ communities in Bangladesh. He previously served as a Human Rights Officer with Inclusive Bangladesh and has been a team member of Dhaka Pride, contributing to human rights advocacy, community engagement, documentation, awareness-raising, and initiatives aimed at strengthening the visibility and participation of LGBTIQ+ people.

Mominul is also a Fellow of Teach For Bangladesh and has worked with a range of non-profit organisations and educational institutions in different professional capacities. Through these experiences, she has developed expertise in working with diverse communities, facilitating learning, supporting institutional development, and connecting education with broader questions of inequality, social justice, and inclusion.

His work is informed by an understanding that discrimination is often shaped by overlapping social, economic, cultural, and institutional factors. This interdisciplinary perspective enables Mominul to examine human rights concerns not only through individual experiences of discrimination, but also through the wider structures and policies that can contribute to exclusion and inequality.

Mominul’s work is grounded in a commitment to equality, education, social justice, and meaningful community participation, with a particular focus on ensuring that LGBTIQ+ people and other marginalised communities are able to participate in shaping the policies, institutions, and social environments that affect their lives.

As Human Rights Officer of the Global Centre for Rights, Mominul contributes to the organisation’s human rights monitoring, research, documentation, advocacy, and community engagement work. Their role supports the development of evidence-based approaches to identifying human rights concerns and strengthening advocacy for communities experiencing discrimination and marginalisation.
